NASAL POLYP

Polyp formation in nose is very common. Nasal polyps are soft, painless benign growths on the lining of nasal passages or sinuses.

They commonly arise from ethmoid labyrinth and sometimes from antrum.

In majority of the cases polyp formation occurs from chronic inflammation due to infection, allergies, any drug sensitivity or certain immune disorders .

They can occur in both right and left nostril which blocks or obstructs the air flow.

However  Small nasal polyps may not cause any symptoms but larger growth or groups of nasal polyps can block  nasal passages which leads to breathing problems and diminishes or loss of sense of smell.

Nasal polyp can affect anyone, but they are more common in adults.

Children under the age of 10 are rarely affected. Medications can often shrunk or eliminate nasal polyps, but surgery is sometime needed to remove them but even after surgeries nasal polyp often return.

AETIOLOGY OF NASAL POLYP

Experts don’t yet fully understand what causes  nasal polyps. Its aetiology is uncertain but some views been given to explain the aetiology.

ALLERGY:

The people with chronic hay fever likely to develop polyps in their lifetime than other healthy individuals.

The allergic reactions in the nasal mucosa cause vasodilatation and increased permeability of the vessels which causes water logging of the tissues.

Thisoedema of the mucosa presents as a polypoidalmass. They are also linked to asthma and drug allergy like aspirin , NSAIDs etc.

LONG STANDING INFECTIONS:

Chronic sinus infections , cystic fibrosis , chronic allergic rhinitis etc. can cause long standing infections.

It gives rise to perilymphangitis and periphelibitis which results in poor absorption of tissue fluid and leads to polyp formation.

Some of the experts believe that it has something to do  with immune system of the patient or chemical makeup of the lining of the nasal mucosa and sinuses.

SYMPTOMS OF NASAL POLYPS:

Common signs and symptoms of chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps include.

DIAGNOSIS

OTOSCOPE:During clinical examination docter looks up in to nasal passages with an otoscope but if the polyp is deep then nasal endoscopy can be done.

CT SCAN OR MRI:It is necessary to determine the size and location of the polyp.

X-RAY:X RAY examination of the paranasal sinuses helps in diagnosis.

RISK FACTORS

Any condition that triggers long term irritation and swelling in your nasal passages or sinuses such as infections or allergies may increase risk of developing nasal polyps.

COMPLICATIONS

Sneezing and yellow, bloody mucus discharge from the nose. There is rawness and soreness in posterior nares. Strong feeling of nasal obstruction.

4)Kali nitricum :

The  chief  guiding symptoms for the use of kali nitricum in addition to right sided nasal polyps are coryza  with nasal obstruction, sneezing, loss of smell and dragging pain in nostrils.It is often indicated in asthma and very valuable in cardiac asthma.

5)Calcarea carb:-

For left sided nasal polyps. Patient takes cold at every change of weather.

It indicated in persons who complains of blocked nose on left side the attending features are fetid smell and yellow discharge from the nose.

Dryness and ulceration of nostrils. Sneezing, markedly in the morning time. Persons given calcarea carb tend to catch a cold easily with slightest change in weather . Coryza alternated with colic.

6)Alliumcepa:-

It is indicated for constant sneezing with nasal polyps.

Sneeezing mainly on entering a warm room.  There is watery discharge of burning, acrid nature from the nose.

The nasal discharge corrodes the upper lips. Hay fever. Headache may also persist along with fluent coryza.  Feel there’s lump at the root of nose.

7)Kalibichromicum:-

There is profuse ,ropy ,thick discharges. Sinusitis.

There is post nasal discharge in nasal polyps cases. The post nasal discharge is yellow ,thick, lumpy, ropy in nature.

It is attented with much hawking. There is marked pressure and burning pain at the root of nose .

A fetid smell from the nose is another feature. vio. It is also prominent medicine treating nasal polyp from chronic sinusitis.

There is hard, dry crusts in the nose which bleeds when detached.
