What is ARTHRITIS

Arthritis is disease causing painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints. It can affect any age but mainly elderly above 50 years of age are mostly effected.

The most common symptoms experienced  in any type of arthritis is restriction of movement with stiffness of joints along with pain and redness.

There are various types of arthritis, among them osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are most common.

TYPES

There are around 100 type of arthritis or musculoskeletal condition. They are categorized into five groups according to origin and pathology.

Osteoarthritis:-

It is the wear and tear that happens. When your joints are overused. It usually happens with age but can be the outcome after any joint injury or obesity.

Joints that bear weight are mostly affected in osteoarthritis like knee, hips, feet, spine.

In osteoarthritis the shock absorbing cartilage becomes insufficient and due to inadequate slippery material that covers the ends of bones.

Rheumatoid arthritis:-

It is autoimmune disorder that attacks the joints of body leads to inflammation.

About 1 out of 5 people with rheumatoid arthritis get lumps on skin called rheumatoid nodules.

Exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not well known but experts believe that the three factors that is tumor necrosis factor (TNF) interleukin-1, interleukin-6 trigger immune system.

The symptoms gradually or suddenly start. They are more seven than osteoarthritis.

Psoriatic arthritis:-

People with psoriatic arthritis have inflammation of skin (psoriasis) and joints (arthritis). In this, it cause raised, red and white patches of inflammation of skin with scales.

About 10%-30% 0f people with psoriasis will get psoriatic arthritis along. Mostly psoriatic arthritis start between 30-50 years of age but can occasionally sometime start at early childhood.

Affects both genders equally, first the skin manifestation show up and later affects the joints. In psoriatic arthritis there is swelling of finger and toes.

People have pitted or discolored finger nails. In some people only one joint affected or few joints affected.

Gout:-

The building up of uric acid crystals in joints called gout. Most of time, whether it’s the big toe or another part of foot is affected.

In gout person wake up with sudden sharp pain in affected joint. Drugs stress or another systemic illness can trigger the gout.

If gout left untreated it affects joints and kidneys. The pathology behind the gout is that body is making more uric acid, kidneys can’t process the excess uric acid.

The symptoms include intense joint pain, discomfort, inflammation, redness.

Lupus:-

It is also called SLE or systemic lupus erythematosus. It is autoimmune disorder that affects joints and many organs of body.

Affects mostly ages between 15 to 45 years. Women are more affected that men.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, fatigue, headache, rashes especially butterfly rash across the cheeks, mouth, sores, sun sensitivity, hair loss, blue or white fingers.

When exposed to cold weather, blood disorder like anaemia low WBC or platelets, chest pain due to inflammation of lining of heart or lungs.
